Professional development reminders

A few reminders when requesting a Professional Development offering inside or outside Central Rivers AEA.

  1. When requesting a new PD request,  please read through your options on the first page and pay close attention to what is highlighted in red.  This will make the process go much quicker.  For instance, the only time you would request a “PO Number Needed” is when it is an internal offering – meaning a Central Rivers AEA offering.

2. In order to make the process easier for you and your administrative assistant, please enter as much information and as many details as possible.

    • Remember to tell them if you need to be registered for the offering
    • If there is a flier or website for the conference – attach/upload the flier
    • If you want your administrative assistant to log into an online account for you to register for an offering make sure you put this in your request along with the username and password if necessary.  Please add in optional comments
    • Is lunch included?  Please add this in optional comments. Are there breakout sessions?  Please add in optional comments

3. It is the responsibility of the staff member to log into the Professional Development system and request the offering.  (you can do this through class link)

4. There is just one approver now, the PD request will go to your supervisor and then to your administrative assistant.

If you have any questions, please reach out your Administrative Assistant.

Printing procedural safeguards manuals for parents rights

The Notice of Procedural Safeguards: Rights of Parents of Students with Disabilities explains the specific rights and responsibilities of the parent in the special education process. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act 2004 (IDEA 2004) requires school districts to give parents the Procedural Safeguards only one time a year, except upon: initial referral or on request for evaluation; the first occurrence of the filing of a due process hearing complaint; or upon request by a parent.

Procedural Safeguards Manual Link: Rights of Parents of Students with Disabilities Ages 3-21 – EnglishUpdated August 2022(English only). Translated versions of the updated document will be available in the coming months. Until translated versions are updated, use the old translated native copy and the staff can add any additional things that are in the new manual through the interpreter.

The responsibility of printing this document is the LEA’s responsibility with the exception of Initial IEPs and Support only IEPs.  We have designated one contact in each AEA to make copies of this document.  Please just email one of the staff members listed below or your administrative assistant and they will be happy to send you a few copies.

Interpreting and translating

Just a reminder and a refresher, the school district is responsible for interpreting/translating services from 3-21(after the initial IEP) unless it is a support only IEP.  If it is a support only IEP, we do provide the interpreter/translator.

The AEA is responsible for all translations/interpreting services for Early Access.

Here is the document  link to explain our process when using Certified Language International.  We only use CLI for interpreting.   (language list linked in the document)

We do have a translator for each of these languages if you are needing documents translated, Spanish, French and Marshallese.

Translations Guidelines:

The AEA’s responsibility to translate documents into a student’s native language is as follows:

IFSPs – PWN and Initial Consent for Eval only  (unless the family requests the whole IFSP)
IEPs  – PWN and Initial Consent for Evaluation
Speech only IEPs – PWN and Initial Consent for Evaluation

Statewide procedures require only the PWN and Consent for Evaluation forms be translated in addition to an interpreter present at IEP/IFSP meetings.

Please communicate to staff that IEP services and supports must be thoroughly documented on the PWN so parents have a clear understanding of what services and supports the IEP team determines their child will receive.

When needing documents translated to Spanish, please contact Melinda Boller, Receptionist in our Clear Lake office and she will be able to pass along what you need.

Questions, please contact Marcia Brolsma, Administrative Assistant to Amy Knupp.

ACHIEVE: transferring students & move-in from out of state

ACHIEVE – Quick Questions
*Please note, you will need to be logged into ACHIEVE in order to access the links provided directly from the PLS.
How do teachers transfer a student between buildings or providers?
Each child with an IEP has a facilitator named (this is similar to Legacy’s A Page Provider/Teacher). The facilitator is able to transfer the child to a new facilitator or share the child’s case with other providers while remaining the facilitator by the simple click of a button on the learner’s dashboard.

For more information on completing this process, view the following resource within the ACHIEVE Professional Learning System (PLS): https://pls-achieve.iowa.gov/cms/learner-dashboard
How do I begin an IEP for a student who has moved-in from out of state and has an active IEP?
It is important, before you begin searching for a move-in student, that you ensure that the student is registered and has been added to the district’s student information system (SIS). When the student has been added to the SIS, a child search can be completed and you can find the steps to begin a move-in IEP utilizing this link: https://pls-achieve.iowa.gov/cms/child-search
